Title: Russia Can’t Run Without Bush Legs

Subtitle: Believes Minister-Counselor for Agricultural Affairs of the U.S. Embassy in Russia

The Deal of the Century is taking shape between the U.S. and Russia – the unprecedented agreement on trade in meat until 2009, the signing of which will pave the way for Russia to join the WTO.

However, agricultural producers and first of all the Ministry of Agriculture have a highly negative opinion of the agreement: they say that we are providing resident status to Bush Legs forever. Evidently this is the reason the document is stuck somewhere deep in the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and its fate is unclear. In order to clarify the situation, we decided to look at the situation from a different angle and met with Allan Mustard, Minister-Counselor for Agricultural Affairs of the U.S. Embassy in Russia.

RG: At what stage currently is the agreement on meat trade?

AM: Some details remain which we must discuss. After that we can sign the document. We are basically ready for it. The responsibility for this is borne by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade on the Russian side and the Trade Representative on the U.S. side.
