The second shipment of registered Angus beef cattle of U.S. origin was delivered to Svetlitsey village of Kaluga oblast. Kaluga Farmer, Sergey Nitsenko, purchased a total of 260 head of American Angus, including 250 heifers and 10 sires of 1.5 year age and of 600-700 kilo weight. The shipment took place as a result of a joint American-Russian project that is focused on introducing the Angus breed in Russia and its high-quality genetics for future breeding. The animals safely survived overseas transportation. The Angus Genetic Center is the first trial of Angus breeding in Russia. That is why the company signed contracts with American specialists for five years who will coordinate all activity at the farm. The new genetic center will be involved in pedigree cattle breeding only.
Black Angus are the most popular beef breed of cattle in the United States with 324,266 animals registered in 2005. Angus cattle are hardy, undemanding, and adaptable; they mature at around two years of age, and have a high carcass yield with marbled meat. Angus are used as beef cattle and are not used for milk intended for human consumption. They are used widely in crossbreeding to improve marbling. Angus females calve easily (i.e. give birth without much stress), partly because of the small size of a typical Angus calf, and have good calf rearing ability.
