Californian Wine Takes Center Stage at Spaso House Winetasting Event

The Wine Institute of California conducted a multi-city European tour featuring wine produced by their member wineries in March 2008. The U.S. Embassy’s Agricultural Trade Office coordinated the Wine Institute’s event in Moscow which was held on March 14 at Spaso House, the residence of the American Ambassador to Russia.

The event included a seminar and wine tasting where more than 250 Californian wines were served. The target audience included Russian hoteliers, restaurateurs, retailers, wine importers, and media representatives.

The event began with a seminar for 60 key sommeliers and importers. Camille Seghesio, winemaker of the Seghesio Family Wineries, spoke on the subject of “Organic, Biodynamic and Sustainable Winemaking in California.” The educational program also included a guided tasting of eight different wines from various American Viticulture Areas in California.

Following the seminar was a large-scale wine tasting in which 300 guests had a huge selection of wines to try while winery representatives shared information about the wine’s characteristics.

The Wine Institute’s tour also included Dusseldorf, London, Paris, Warsaw, and Helsinki.

Plans are already underway for the Wine Institute of California’s 2009 European tour which will include an event at the Consul General’s residence in St. Petersburg on March 27.
